Storm Watch

(5/28) Storm SC had a good showing at the KYSA State Open Cup over the past weekend at Masterson Station Park in Lexington. Joel and Hunt Pope's 94 girls were the lone representative on the girls' side, going 0-1-2 on the weekend in a tough group with Northern KY, Atletico Flames and Javanon. On the boys' side, Charlie Campbell's 94s nearly went on to the finals, but fell short against Javanon, 1-0. Evan Sutherland and Brandon Turek's 93 boys defeated Javanon 3-0 and topped their group, securing a place in next weekend's semis. Sam Pile and the 92 boys played in the 'group of death' with Midwest Regional teams Bluegrass White and NK United, winning 2 and drawing 2 but not advancing.

93 Storm are the first Storm team to reach the semi finals since the '80 Storm reached the State Finals in 1998. The 80's reached the semis in 1996 as well. Coach Sutherland was part of that team and that makes him the first Storm member to reach the final round as both a player and a coach. Congratulations to Coaches Sutherland and Turek and to the 93 boys!

(4/14) JYSA Storm was well represented in two Region II tournaments over the past weekend. The 96 and 94 Girls, coached by Joel and Hunt Pope, had a good showing in the MASC tournament at Joyce Park in Cincinnati along with our 98 girls team. The 96 girls lost their opener to the tourney Champ, Westlake, 4-1, but turned it around and defeated Dynamo FC Black 3-1 and Zionsville Eagles 2-1. The 94 girls defeated NK Red Storm and Fairfield 2-0 but lost a 1-0 contest to BSC Cobras. Steve Stockhausen's 98 girls didnt win a game, but were competitive with some very good teams, including Sycamore Arsenal, Star Jags and Hurricane out of Beechmont. On the whole, it was a good showing for all our girls' teams.

Three of the boys' teams represented JYSA at the Red Lion Invitational at Lawrence Soccer Complex in Indianapolis. Charlie Campbell's 94 boys went 2-1, only losing to the Indiana State Champs Westside United in the first match. They went on to defeat Anthony Wayne United 6-1 and Greenfield Strikers 1-0. Evan Sutherland and Brandon Turek's 93 boys won their group, beating 93 FC Pride 3-0, Lou Fusz (MO) 2-0 and Cincinnati Futbol Elite 1-0. Storm reached the final, defeating rival LFC 93 Premier 2-0 in the championship match to bring home the gold. The 92 boys defeated Columbus Blast 1-0 and played well in a 2-1 loss against NSR's 4th ranked team nationally, FC Pride 92 Premier. Sunday morning, the 92s defeated NWI United 4-1.

On the whole, this was a great weekend for Storm - Congratulations to the 93 boys, who brought home the gold!

(2/4) Evan Sutherland, Head Coach of the 93 Storm SC Boys and 98 Girls, received the USSF National C Coaching License in Bradenton, Florida on January 10 at the IMG Academy. Coach Sutherland worked with Mike Dickey - Head Coach of the U15 Women's National Team, Jim Launder the Head Coach of Region 2, and Tom Goodman, the former USYSA National Youth Director. He also had the opportunity to meet Sunil Gulati, the President of the United States Soccer Federation and was also exposed to the training philosophies of the U17 Men's National Team and the U23 Olympic Team. Coach Sutherland becomes the first coach in the Storm Soccer Club to receive the USSF National C Coaching Certificate and will be eligible for the USSF National B License in 12 months. Great job to Coach Sutherland and good luck on the B in 12 months!

(12/7) It is with great sadness I report former JYSA '79 Jammers and Jessamine County High School standout Andrew Allender passed away unexpectedly on December 3rd. Andrew loved the game and played hard for the first JYSA select team, JYSA Jammers, under coach David West when it formed in 1990. He later played for Jessamine County High under coaches Sam Pile and Matt Moore and graduated in 1997. Andrew was a very happy young man with a great attitude. He was loved by many. The full text of Andrew's obituary can be found here. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Allender family during this difficult time.

-Sam Pile, 12/6/07

(12/5) Two Storm teams represented the club over the weekend in the Norcross Nike Cup in Atlanta, GA. Joel and Hunt Pope's 94 Girls drew 0-0 with Norcross Fury Gold and Lady Cannons Gold before defeating NASA 12 Elite 2-1 to advance to the final. In the final, the girls lost in a shootout to the Lady Twins, the #5 team in North Carolina. It was a great performance from the girls, as they played in the Gold Division. Sam and Taylor Pile's 92 boys drew with St Louis-Kutis 1-1 and Atlanta Silverbacks Elite 1-1 on Saturday after leading in both games, but were unable to close the matches out and take the full 3 points. In the Sunday match, the 92's fell to a strong Kolping Premier team out of Ohio South, who went on to win the boys U16 Gold Div. It was a weekend of good football and the teams represented their club and state very well against some strong Region III teams.

(11/27/07) The JYSA General Board meeting and Election will be held on December 10th, the 2nd Monday in December, at 7pm at Town Square Bank. All coaches are strongly encouraged to come as they are voting members in the election.

(11/26/2007) The 96 Storm Boys will be having a winter tryout on December 15, from 11am to 1pm at the Icthus fields near Wilmore, KY off of US 68. The team is looking to add some true 96 birth year players and to expand the roster for Fall 2008 Full Sided play. Contact Coach Brock Sutherland with inquiries - futbroc@yahoo.com

10/20/07 - The JYSA fields at the new complex are completed and seeded, we just need a Storm rock crew to remove all the small rocks!

The 94 and 96 Storm Girls were the champions and finalists at the Fall Ball Tournament in Cincinnatti! Great job girls and great job by coaches Joel and Hunt Pope.
